TikTok is often seen as a time-sucking video platform for mindless entertainment. But its short videos and sound-driven features also make it perfect for sharing information efficiently and creatively.

Whether you want to keep up with the latest government info, find the next nature trail for your weekend hike or steal some tricks for making your own video content, here are nine government TikTok accounts and what you can learn from them:

Places in Singapore To Explore

Going on nature hikes and walks has become a popular pandemic activity. Not sure where to go in tiny Singapore? Head over to the National Parks Board’s TikTok account (@nparkssg) to get a glimpse of Singapore’s many parks, gardens and trails. It’s an easy way to scope out a site to explore, especially if you can’t find many photos of it online.

With pandemic travel restrictions, being a tourist in your own country is a rising trend. If you’re looking for attractions to visit, the Singapore Tourism Board’s TikTok videos (@visit_singapore) are just what you need. You’ll not only see videos about Singapore’s popular attractions like Jewel Changi Airport and Gardens By The Bay, but lesser known locations as well.

Singapore Culture and Lifestyle

Another TikTok newbie, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth joined TikTok (@mccysg) in May 2021, just a few months before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. If you’re interested in anything related to Singapore’s culture, this account is for you.

In their early videos, you can learn about Singapore’s Olympic athletes and the sports they play. Most recently, they also ran a series on mental health awareness.

If you’re a book lover or someone who just likes learning about Singapore, the National Library Board’s (NLB) TikTok (@nlbsg) will be right up your alley. Laugh along to book discussions in snippets from NLB’s Comedy Night At The Library event, take a sneak peek at the latest NLB exhibition, or learn history titbits such as what the National Day Parade looked like 40 years ago.

Tiktok can be used in a lot of ways to help the young and old

Caregiving for the Elderly

The Agency for Integrated Care’s TikTok account (@aicsingapore) is proof that the platform is not just for (or about) young people. Their videos focus on how to interact with and care for the elderly – how to cook for them, activities to do with them, and tips for managing health conditions. These can be especially useful for those who are new to caregiving.

Going Green and Supporting Local Produce

The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) (@msesingapore) is one of the youngest government accounts on TikTok, joining in July 2021. But they have already posted a couple of videos with tips on living a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This includes eating locally sourced food – MSE’s videos will show you how to find them in supermarkets and even what to cook afterwards.

For recycling tips, look no further than the National Environmental Agency’s TikTok account (@nea_sg). Their videos show just how many recyclable items we use every day – not just plastic bottles and cutlery, but electronics like laptops and cables as well. They will even show you what to do with your non-recyclable waste to be kinder to the environment.

Using Government Apps and Digital Services

Did you know that you can find your PSLE results on SingPass? This is just one of many tips that the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) has shared on TikTok about their products. These tips could make your life easier, such as when your TraceTogether token has run out of battery and you need to know how to get it replaced at a vending machine.

GovTech’s TikTok account (@govtechsg) is also savvy about keeping up with trends, often using the latest sound or face filter. It’s a useful lesson on creating content – sharing information in an engaging way not only gets more clicks, but also ensures that the information sticks.

Updates on the Local COVID-19 Measures

If you are not sure how many people you can dine out with, or struggle to explain to your parents what they should do if they test positive for COVID-19, one of gov.sg’s TikTok videos (@gov.sg) may help. Important information on local COVID-19 measures are condensed into simple bite-sized explainers, making them perfect for sharing with your family and friends.
