Unique Growth Opportunities Public Officers Can Take Advantage Of

There are many opportunities to grow within each profession. Here are some unique growth opportunities open only to Singapore’s public officers.

Considering the unique benefits that come with being a public officer, life in the Public Service is far from ordinary.

From once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to serve the public good to continued growth throughout one’s career, here are some initiatives that public officers can take advantage of.

1. Free and Personalised Career Coaching Services

One common misconception about the Public Service is the lack of career progression.

To ensure that every public officer receives the necessary guidance for their growth, they have access to a suite of training courses and resources, as well as a free career coaching service offered by the Public Service Career Coach Network, where public officers can consult a career coach to help them map out their career path and explore options for greater growth.

Another resource available to them is One Talent Gateway—an AI-powered platform that maps out personalised career trajectories, tracks career goals, and offers a list of relevant training programmes from reputable institutions.

2. Cross-Agency and Cross-Sector Learning Opportunities

In recent years, more people have sought to expand their skills beyond their current roles, prompting many organisations to facilitate more opportunities for employees to master their skill sets and grow in new ones.

The Public Service Division has since launched the Short-Term Immersion Programme (STIP), an initiative that exposes officers to opportunities to work at another agency between 1 day to 4 weeks, allowing them to shadow their peers and learn on the job.

Programmes like the STIP as well as gig work opportunities provide officers the platform to deepen their skills across functional areas in various government agencies, thus promoting cross-agency collaborations.

For opportunities beyond the Public Service, the Talent Attachment Programme offers 6-month to 1-year attachments to private and non-governmental sectors.

With 16 ministries and more than 50 statutory boards, the Public Service provides job rotation opportunities for officers to step out of their comfort zone, setting them on the path for continued growth throughout their careers.

3. Time off to Volunteer in Meaningful Causes

Being a public officer already involves addressing a broad spectrum of needs that positively impact citizens' lives. This includes creating systemic solutions to mitigate social issues, bringing beneficial initiatives to Singaporeans, and even saving lives.

But many have also taken a step further to make an impact by volunteering for various causes, such as caring for animals at animal shelters or uplifting the underprivileged in Singapore.

To expose public officers to more tailored opportunities, officers are entitled to a take 40 hours a year to self-initiate developmental opportunities with external organisations, including volunteering in causes they are passionate about.

Under the Public Service For Good movement, officers are encouraged to participate in curated initiatives or events that allow them to grow and utilise their skills for the betterment of society, whether by being mentors for students or lending their skills to non-profit organisations.

This provides public officers with opportunities to stay connected with grassroots issues, enabling them to consistently create solutions to enhance the lives of Singaporeans.
